I'm Choosing Plants Over Plastic in 2019

I don’t know about you, but I’m getting a bit sick of all the plastic that surrounds our lives. From our clothes, to our food packaging, toiletries, and more. I’m looking to seriously reduce my plastic usage (especially single-use plastics) this year.

Last year my household did a great job at reducing plastic usage, and it felt great to know we’re contributing less and less to plastic ending up in landfills , rivers and oceans. Our drinks/beverages are taken, stored, etc in ceramic or glass, plastic bags are a big no-no, and we’ve stopped buying clothing with synthetics textiles altogether, except for high quality outdoor garments that are likely to last a few decades when well looked after.

2019 is where we will aim to reduce our usage even more. It’s something I’ve become pretty intense about lately. That, and deciding not to buy any products containing palm oil. But that’s a separate post for another day!

Have you heard of the Khanyiso Reed? It grows in abundance in Mozambique, and is naturally hollow along its length, and is pretty much a natural straws - much like bamboo.

I took a few snap-shots of the straws for Khanyiso last year, and shared the album on Facebook, but I thought it would be worth another share here, as it ties in nicely with my “use less-plastic” aims for 2019.

You can find out more about these Planet friendly straws on Facebook at @PlantsOverPlastic

And you can purchase these beautiful straws from one of my favourite online stores - Faithful to Nature.

I still have some of these awesome straws left over from the shoot, so I’ll be looking to incorporate them into a few conceptual product and food photo-shoots I have planned for the next few months. More on that in a future post - so keep an eye out ;)
